Interlaken, Switzerland — October 2006
The first leg of our trip was in Switzerland. We stayed at a hostel in Interlaken, which is a gorgeous mountain town between two big lakes (inter-laken, get it?)
This is the view from our hostel window! Not bad! The town is surrounded by mountains that were usually halfway covered by clouds in the morning. Everything about this place in beautiful. Look at how blue that water is!
This guy lives outside the supermarket right across the street from the hostel. You can actually see him hiding behind the street signs in the first picture.
Wandering through town, we happened upon this nice house covered in dead animal parts.
That's the Swiss Alps back there! Wow! There are all kinds of amazing outdoor activities you can do in this area — skiing, mountain climbing, skydiving, rafting, bungee jumping, etc. — but we only had time for a little bit of hiking in the not-so-snow-covered mountains right at the edge of town.
In the background there is the mountain we hiked most of the way up.
You'll have to take my word for it that these gray swans were gigantic like tyrannosaurs. I wanna know what they're feeding those things.
I took this picture of some sort of coccoon or egg pod or whatever in the hopes that someone can tell me what it is. These things were all over the place, and it struck me as odd that they were all sticking up from the leaves rather than hanging downward, and that they were so colorful and shiny. Maybe this is what those giant swans hatch out of.
More Alps! I really hope I get to see those peaks a from lot closer up next time.
Here's a view of the town after hiking halfway up the mountain. We watched skydivers landing in that field off to the left there.

Okay, this is actually later on, in the train station in Zurich, on our way to Vienna, but I had nowhere else to put it. A cherub squeezing the juices out of a crocodile.
